On November 20th, 2024, Talking Hands delivered a lecture at PACC - Design Center in Shanghai, where it had the opportunity to share its story with a group of artists-in-residence. PACC is a center for research and practice that aims to enhance and preserve craftsmanship as a significant component of Chinese cultural heritage.
The project connects artisans with artists, designers and researchers in the heart of a park, in a space suspended in water, a place of design and meditation where folk arts are measured with different forms of contemporary design expression. During the visit, Talking Hands met craft artists from different regions of China, each carrying their rich heritage of ancient figures, symbols, and iconographic elements, witnessing some of their techniques being performed live.
Folk Art heritage is not understood as something static and unchanging but rather measures itself against contemporary practices, bringing about evolutions, intersections, transforming local worlds into global contexts and facilitating the building of a dialogue between the public and artisans.
